Giudecca Island is Venice’s SoHo
After being neglected by Venetians and tourists for decades the beautiful Giudecca Island, located right in front of Piazza San Marco, is now getting the attention it deserves. THE BAUERs Group together with Polymnia, a society that is part of the Foundation of Venice, is inaugurating a Centre of Photography in the newly renovated “Casa dei Tre Oci” palace, that will make the area even more appealing to the public and will bring together enterprises and culture.
The Centre’s first exhibit, “Personal Best” by the great photographer Elliott Erwitt, opened its doors on Thursday March 29th and will run until July 15th, 2012.
Denis Curti, curator of “Personal Best” and photo reporter from Magnum agency, will be a guest of Il Palladio Hotel&Spa, one of the BAUERs’ luxury properties, which is located within walking distance from the “Casa dei Tre Oci.” The proximity of the Hotel to the exhibit is something that the BAUERs hopes its guests will take advantage of. Il Palladio Hotel&Spa is a 5 star hotel renovated from a 16th century convent that belonged to the Zitelle’s Church.
Il Palladio Hotel&Spa and the nearby Villa F offer guests a relaxing meditative environment surrounded by beautiful gardens that are so unique to Giudecca Island.
Francesca Bortolotto Possati, President and CEO of THE BAUERs, personally oversaw the renovation of Villa F and of Il Palladio Hotel&Spa, giving back to Venice two architectural jewels, away from the noise and crowds of the city, that now can be enjoyed by visitors and residents.
By adding “Casa dei Tre Oci” to the already artistic aesthetic of THE BAUERs, Giudecca Island is poised to become the Venetian equivalent of New York’s SoHo neighborhood and one of the most beloved destinations for musicians, movie stars and art enthusiasts.
Born in Paris in 1928 into a Russian family of Jewish origin, Elliott Erwitt spent his childhood in Italy and moved to the United States in 1939.
His exhibit, «Personal Best» has been displayed at the MEP in Paris, the Reina Sofia in Madrid and ICP in New York, and now in Venice. It showcases a selection of 140 of the most famous photographs from Erwitt’s entire career, including photographs of celebrities such as Jacqueline Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Che Guevara and Richard Nixon. Each of his subjects is portrayed with a sharp point of view that at the same time is full of empathy.
The Italian edition is organized by Denis Curti and is produced by Civita Tre Venezie in partnership with Jacob Cohën and under the patronage of Veneto Region and Venice municipality, Cultural activities Department.
The BAUERs celebrates the Gustav Klimt exhibit that is being dedicated to this renowned Viennese painter and his muse Adele Bloch-Bauer. Klimt was first invited to Venice for the 1910 Biennial of Arts, and now his genius returns to the lagoon for a major exposition to honor the 150 anniversary of the artist's birth. The Hotel BAUER invites its guests to enjoy this unique event taking place from March 24-July 8, 2012.
Adele Bloch-Bauer was the beautiful and determined daughter of one of the most important bankers of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. She had voluminous black hair, huge dark eyes and was well known in the Twenties in Vienna for her passion for art and for Gustav Klimt, who painted her covered in gold at least four times.
Now, Venice—its visitors and its citizens—will have the opportunity to admire Klimt's beautiful muse Adele along with other famous paintings, drawings, furniture and jewels that comprise the exhibit called “Klimt in the sign of Hoffmann and the Secession," at Museo Correr in Piazza San Marco, organized by the Civic Venetian Museums.
To celebrate this show and the coincidence of names with Adele, the Hotel Bauer in Venice will host a dinner on March 23, the opening night of the exhibit. Guests, to include the curator of the show Alfred Weidinger and new director of Muve Foundation Gabriella Belli, among others, will be feted at Hotel Bauer's restaurant De Pisis facing the Grand Canal—it will be as if Adele Bloch-Bauer and Klimt beautiful painting of her will be the real guests of honor. And for the length of the exhibit at Museo Correr, it will be as if the memory of Adele permeates the rooms of the hotel. These paintings had an unfortunate destiny. Adele, who was a big supporter of public museums, requested that after the death of her husband, the industrialist Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, the paintings of her by Gustav Klimt be donated to the Museum of Belvedere in Vienna. Unfortunately, the Nazi regime confiscated these in 1938, along with many other works of art. It was not until 2006 that the Klimt paintings were returned to the heirs of Adele and Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer. Now, Venice is pleased to give its public the chance to see these masterpieces.
International connoisseurs, fashion experts and press will all be meeting in Venice on March 10th, 2012 for the inauguration of the “Diana Vreeland after Diana Vreeland” exhibit, followed by an exclusive cocktail at Hotel Bauer with Francesca Bortolotto Possati.
Diana Vreeland, who for 25 years was a style icon for Harper’s Bazaar and editor- in- chief of Vogue until 1971, will be remembered and honored in Venice for the first time. The Hotel Bauer will be the center of this celebration dedicated to her.
On this occasion models, fashion editors who grew up with Vreeland and top names in the fashion world will all be staying at the Hotel. The evening of the exhibit's inauguration, The Hotel Bauer will host an exclusive cocktail reception celebrating Diana Vreeland, which will take place in hotel's beautifully appointed salons.
Francesca Bortolotto Possati, President and CEO of The BAUERs, will host fashion lunimaries such as Benedetta Barzini and Fiona Thyssen, as well as Stefano Tonchi, Editor in Chief of W Magazine, Frances Corner, head of the London College of Fashion; Becky Conekin, Professor of of History and Culture in Fashion at Yale ; Laurent Cotta, Curator of Galliera Museum in Paris; Amy De La Haye, fashion historian; Debo Kaat, Director of Mode Museum in Antwerp; Fukai Akiko, Director and chief curator of The Kyoto Costume Institute; Louise Wallenberg, Director of Centre for Fashion Studies at Stockholm University and Miren Arzalluz, Curator at the Balenciaga Foundation.
The Diana Vreeland exhibition will take place March 10th to June 25th, 2012 at Palazzo Fortuny. The show celebrates Vreeland's work and her impact as a forerunner of modern fashion journalism. Her life and special charisma will be represented by her Yves Saint Laurent and Givenchy outfits, as well as by a collection of the everyday objects of her life.
The exhibit is curated by Maria Luisa Frisa, Director of the Fashion Design Degree Course at the Faculty of Art and Design in Venice (IUAV) and by Judith Clark, professor at London College of Fashion. The main goal of this exhibition is to show how fashion can be a complex phenomenon, but at the same time can be a privileged and important observatory to interpret taste and trends of the contemporary world. This message is in perfect harmony with “the spirit of The BAUERs.”
This year Carnival in Venice will be more special than ever as the BAUERs Hotel in Venice will play the cards of seduction, love and surprise. From February 4th to February 21st, throughout the days of Carnival, the BBAR Lounge will transform into "The Golden Box." Special events will occur nightly, presenting vaudeville treats for late-night lovers. On the first night, February 10th, guests will delight in an unique performance especially created for The BAUERs known as "Bauerlesque" . Lucky lovers on Valentine’s Day will be entertained by a special "San (Rodolfo) Valentino" gala dinner on February 14.
The history of the Venice Carnival tradition began after 1162. The Republic defeated Ulrico, Patriarch of Aquileia in that year, and began a tradition
of slaughtering a bull and 12 pigs in the Piazza San Marco around Shrove Tuesday to commemorate the victory. The first document mentioning the use of masks dates back to 1268, and now masks have become a staple of the celebration. One can see decorative masks all over Venice during Carnevale.
Carnival takes place in Venice during the twelve days before Ash Wednesday with many events all over the city, from improvised street shows to performances put on by the organizers. Every year the City chooses a central idea taken from various cultural or show-biz themes. Several events take place throughout the city, from Carnival feasts and masked balls in private palaces to people in masks who happily take to the streets and squares in search of fun... It's possible to see every kind of costume, from 18th century noblewomen to the most inventive and creative modern costumes.
The heart of Carnival is Saint Mark's Square, with its huge stage for concerts and shows, but also the city's other main squares act as perfect stages for masqueraders who wish to become, at least for a few hours a year, the protagonists of another life.
The culminating moments of Venice Carnival include the Flight of the Angel, which marks the beginning of Carnival celebrations, the Water Procession, with decorated boats and masked rowers, and the final Grand Ball on Shrove Tuesday in Saint Mark's Square, with the traditional fireworks show in front of the Duke's palace (the Palazzo Ducale)
The city is beautifully and magic in January the sunny days are giving us unique scenarios and sunset.
The still cold air let walk more quikly , extend your usal path , willing to discover new experiences.
It is my favourite time to wonder about, snapping photographs, admiring the drifts, the shadows, the incredible transformation of the city into a wonderland of soft and cosy winter.
January in Venice is truly one the most magical times to live the city.
It is a luxury to be able to enjoy its beauties in the stillness and silence of solitude or in the company of ones true love.
Not for a million pounds could one wish to evacuate the city of all its visitors and denizens, to imagine such a perfect emptiness.
This is how the city was meant to be lived.
It becomes the scene to one’s own play, the theatre of our lives, for as Shakespear once wrote, “life is but a stage”.
